Plenty of folks have already made the point that Tenchi Muyo! has absolutely no plot.
Most of the same people have also made the point that in spite of having no plot, it is one of the most enjoyable Anime series ever created. This is easily attributed to the wonderful cast of chracters, and an untiring playfulness in the many subplots that contribute in their arbitrary way to making up the plot that isn't there.
The story begins with our hero, Tenchi (Jurai) Masaki, a 16 year old apprentice monk at his grandfather's temple, The Masaki Shrine. The Masaki Shrine is the kind of rural buddhist hill shrine that is found all over Japan, and the opening episode presents a typical scene at a shrine in midsummer.
The Masaki shrine has a sort of ghost in the closet, however, in the form of a demon that is held trapped in a cave on the grounds. The demon turns out to be, tada, Ryoko (aka, by Sasami, "Ryoko Oni Chan", which the dubbers drop the ball on entirely and just translate as "Ryoko", when it means, literally "Demon Girl Ryoko", which is much funnier in context Ah, and I now realise it is also a pun on 'ni chan', an additionally endearing form of 'chan'.) who falls utterly and totally in love with Tenchi (of course) and becomes a sympathetic and downright endearing character in no time flat.
The non-existant plot goes through continuous and dizzying gyrations for about a total of 100 episodes of OVA and TV shows. Of what I have seen so far, the only part I have found tedious was the Pretty Sammy story which poked and prodded Bill Gates. This should have appealed to me, but it lacked the necessary hackerishness to make it really successful.
There is a ridiculous amount of nudity in the OVA series. It is not exactly offensive... the characters are not quite anatomically correct... but it seems dirty because there just doesn't seem to be any particular reason for it, since the bodies are not drawn with enough detail for it to be tittilating to anyone over the age of 5. Just why are there so many hot springs scenes??
Tenchi Muyo was apparently well endowed with a music budget. There are a number of very catchy original songs, and Sasami's seiyuu Chisa Yokoyama enjoyed a short career as an international pop star singing Sasami's many songs, often in costumes modeled after Sasami's. A number of these songs are extremely funny (meaning incomprehensible) when translated.
Speaking of costumes, and this is another thing that makes the inordinate amount of nudity questionable, the characters costumes are exquisitely designed and detailed. Ryoko's battle outfit, and the Jurai battle costumes are very fine designs. Sasami is an absolute fashion plate under all circumstances, notice particularly the carrot-themed ensembles she wears. In Magical Project S the entire Kawai family wears matching (and stunning) [carrot patterned PJ's].
